We keep what matters most on our phones: photos of our children, voice notes from a mother, conversations with friends, documents, access to money. While we are around, it is just convenient. When we are out of reach, it becomes a locked room and we hold the only keys.
What we tend to put off
Making a list of accounts, writing down where the documents are, telling our family what we have long wanted to say: it all feels like something for later. A paper legacy is found in a drawer. A digital one is found nowhere: the password cannot be guessed, and the verification code goes to a number that may already be switched off.
Why this feels different in Ukraine
Russia's invasion has made millions of people move, be separated from relatives or live far from those they love. Many know first-hand what it is like to discover that the last photos, chats or access are stuck on a phone that can no longer be reached. We do not like to say it aloud, which is exactly why it is worth preparing quietly and in advance, without drama.
This is not about fear. It is about care: making sure your family does not have to guess what you would have wanted to say to them.
Where to start in 30 minutes
- Make a list. Email, photo cloud, bank, exchanges, messengers, domains. No passwords: only what and where.
- Turn on the built-in tools. Google's Inactive Account Manager, Apple's Legacy Contact.
- Choose one trusted person and tell them where your instructions are.
- Think about your phone number. Recovery codes are sent to it.
- Write a few words to each person you love. More on that next.
Words matter more than passwords
Access to a cloud brings photos back. But no account holds the answer to "what did he want to tell me?" The words a person never got to say are the ones families search for longest. One warm message, written calmly and in advance, is worth more than the longest set of instructions.
Where mementomori.digital fits
We built the service for exactly this: you write a separate message for each recipient, it is encrypted in your browser, and we cannot read it. If you stop confirming you are okay for a long time, the messages are delivered to your family only after a manual review. $2 a month, cancel any time.
